English vs.Chinese
In Taiwan, most of students have the experience of learning the second language in the school. In several different second languages, English is the most
students learned, including me. As a English learner, I have studied
this language for 15 years. At the beginning of learning English, I faced
some challenges on it. English and Chinese are two different language
systems. Thus, I thought that learning English was difficult at that
time. However, as time goes by, I found some differences between
English and Chinese. After knowing their differences and rules, I think
that it is helpful for me to study English. In addition, I feel more
enthusiastic about English learning. Although these two languages are
similar in some ways, but I will introduce their differences from three
aspects.
First, in the grammar, the verb will change with different tense and person in English
sentences, while this situation won’t appear in Chinese. In other word, the verb will add
such as “ ed ”, “ es ’, “ s ” etc in different situation in English. For instance, “ I play the
basketball in the park. ” is the present. If the sentence is the past, it will become “ I played the basketball in the park yesterday. ” Another example is
the change of the singular or plural form. When the sentence
is in the first person, it is “ I watch TV in the living room. ”
However, the verb is also different in the third person, the
sentence will be “ He watches TV in the living room. ”
Through the examples, we can find that the verb will
change in different tense and person in English.
Nevertheless, in Chinese, the verb is still the same in different tense and person.
For example, “ I go to school by bus. ” is present, while in Chinese, the verb doesn’t change in the past, it will be “ I go to school by bus yesterday. ” Compare to English, Chinese rule seems to be easier on the tense change and person change.

Second, English and Chinese have their respectively pronunciation systems. English is
composed of 26 alphabets and has phonetic symbols.
With the phonetic symbols, people can speak the majority
of vocabularies correctly. Different as English, Chinese has
nearly 50,000 distinct characters. According to the
information from BBC, a student should know about 2,000
to 3,000 characters to be able to understand the articles on
the Chinese newspaper. Due to several characters, it seems
that Chinese is difficult and complicated to learn for
foreign learners. In addition, they can not have the correct pronunciation on
the unfamiliar words. Fortunately, foreign learners can study Chinese with the
Romanization System. Therefore, we may say that English has a huge difference with
Chinese in pronunciation system.
Third, English usually focuses on the first part of the sentence. On the contrary, Chinese puts more emphasis on the last part of the sentence. English sentences reflect their
culture distinctly. In most of English nations, people tend to express their thoughts or
goals directly. In other words, they want to convey their opinions to others at first. That is the reason why they put the important information at the beginning of the sentence. In contrast with English, Chinese usually puts the important information on the back.
Similar as English, the culture also influences Chinese deeply. People like to tell the story chronologically. Therefore, it results in the different location of the significant
information. In conclusion, we can infer that the culture may influence the system of the language.
As mentioned above, we can see three differences between English and Chinese. At first,
the verb will change with different tense and person in English, while Chinese doesn’t
have this rule in the grammar. Another difference is pronunciation systems. In English,
if people are familiar with the phonetic symbols, they can speak the majority of words.
Compare to English, people need to memorize a lot of Chinese characters to be able to
pronounce correctly. The last one is the different location of the significant information. This difference results from the influence of different culture. Through these
comparisons, we can understand the two languages further. In my opinion, culture and philosophy has a close relationship with language. Due to the different cultures, they form
varied language systems. When we try to learn a new language, we can also recognize
their culture and background. If we have more knowledge of the background, it will
arouse our enthusiasm of language learning. To sum up, it is helpful for me to learn
English when I comprehend its differences with Chinese.
